Sutro Footwear Alder Boots Review

This past weekend I had the pleasure of testing out the newest pair of shoes in my closet and the shoes that I will be wearing with my suit for my wedding in November, the Alder Boots from Sutro Footwear.

I have been looking for a new pair of boots to add to my collection for quite some time, and with my Fiancée and I’s wedding coming up in 9 months I figured it was as a good a time as any to start looking for a new pair.

After researching some different brands and looks, and trying to find a pair I loved that was high quality, I found Sutro Footwear. Sutro Footwear is a San Francisco based footwear company that started in 2010, making high quality men’s and women’s leather shoes and boots.

Compared to other brands/competitors in their market, Sutro Footwear is very reasonably priced. For men their oxfords are usually priced around $180 a pair, and their boots range anywhere from $200-$250 a pair.

For women, it’s slightly cheaper. You can find different types of boots and heels ranging anywhere from $145 to $225.

What also set Sutro Footwear apart for me besides their reasonable price, was the quality of the shoe itself. And the process that goes into each pair of Sutro Footwear shoes.

Sutro shoes and boots are designed and delveloped in San Francisco, and then they are handcut/handstiched one pair at a time, in a family owned factory in Mexico.

Also, and arguably one of the biggest signs of true quality, the shoes are all made from full grain leather. Not bonded leather. Basically that means that Sutro Footwear shoes are going to be rugged and durable. And last but not least, every pair of Sutro Footwear shoes are Goodyear Welted! That means that Sutro shoes can easily be resoled over time, makes the shoe incredibley durable, and is more water resistant.

Sutro Footwear sent me a pair of their Alder Boots in Honey, and I have to say I am very impressed.

They were very comfortable from the first wear, there was no discomfort or stiffness that is usually expected from a brand new pair of leather shoes. They have a nice removable foam insert inside the boots that made them very comfortable.

They also added a very nice rubber midsole on the bottom of the shoe that helps give it a little extra traction in slippery conditions. (You can see the rubber midsole in the photo below.)

The boots fit as expected for me. Usually men’s boots fit slightly bigger than a normal shoe size, and so I would say order a half size smaller than you normally would. I usually wear size a 11 in all my shoes, I went with size 10.5 and they fit near perfectly.

When it comes to treating your Sutro Footwear shoes, they recommend NOT using any type of waterproof spray on their shoes. Rather, they say you should use Mink oil to help preserve the look and style do the shoes.

Conclusion

If any of you are in the market for a high quality pair of leather shoes that won’t break the bank, seriously, check out Sutro Footwear. They make very high quality, premium leather shoes at a good price point. I cannot wait to wear these for my wedding day. I have been very impressed with my Alder Boots, and I highly recommend any pair of Sutro Footwear shoes!
